Equine Assisted Therapy is a therapeutic approach that involves interactions with horses to promote emotional, mental, and physical well-being
Key Components of Equine Assisted Therapy
1. Interaction with Horses involves activities such as grooming, feeding, and leading horses. These interactions help individuals develop trust, empathy, and communication skills.
2. Therapeutic Goals: The therapy is designed to address specific goals, such as improving emotional regulation, reducing anxiety, and enhancing social skills. It can be tailored to meet the needs of individuals with various conditions, including PTSD, autism, and depression.
3. Non-Verbal Communication: Horses are highly sensitive to non-verbal cues and can mirror the emotions of the individuals they interact with. This helps clients become more aware of their own emotions and behaviors.
Meet the Horses
Sugar was initially purchased for $1.00. Unfortunately, due to the financial burden of feeding, boarding, and veterinary care, her previous owner was unable to continue providing the necessary support. During her time with us, Sugar underwent surgery for colic. Once considered the lowest-ranking horse in the pasture, she has since risen to become the top mare.
Beau was rescued from Riverton, UT, after her owners faced challenges in providing proper care. She was found with numerous cockleburs entangled in her hair and mane, all of which had to be painstakingly removed. Known for her distinctive paint coloring, Beau is a favorite among many of our visitors.
Silver is a $40,000 thoroughbred champion jumping horse who, unfortunately, developed "kissing spine" as a result of his intensive jumping career. Unable to continue competing, Silver was at risk of being discarded. We now limit riders to those weighing under 150 lbs., and he has shown remarkable improvement under our care.
Sassy was discovered near a creek as a malnourished foal after the death of her mother. Her resilience and spirited personality earned her the name "Sassy," derived from her original name, Sassafras. Despite her difficult start, Sassy has blossomed into a lively and energetic horse, full of life and personality.
China joined our pasture at just six months of age, making her the longest-tenured horse in our care. Known for her curiosity, she frequently explores new boundaries and enjoys affection, often seeking out opportunities to snuggle with her human companions.
True is an energetic and inquisitive horse who enjoys testing boundaries. As our largest horse, he is not shy about using his size to assert his presence. True often engages in playful interactions with the other geldings and enjoys socializing with his peers.
Gallo was rescued from West Jordan following a tragic and traumatic experience. Along with his two siblings, he suffered severe abuse at the hands of his previous owner, including being stabbed with a samurai sword. Tragically, Gallo's sister, Gracie, did not survive the ordeal. Gallo’s recovery has been slow, but he has begun to trust people once again and, on occasion, allows visitors to pet him.
Peanut is a quarter horse trained for barrel racing. While he initially lacked enthusiasm for work, his compliance is driven by fear of what might happen if he does not comply. With time, he has begun to trust humans more and is learning to enjoy working alongside them.
Poncho was rescued from Lehi, UT, where he arrived in poor condition, underweight and suffering from neglect. His left front foot has shown significant improvement over the past year, though it still requires ongoing care. Poncho has made an incredible recovery, regaining much of his former vitality and strength.
Gus Gus is a miniature horse who previously spent his days giving carriage rides to children for long hours. He was rescued from this demanding life and is now enjoying a more relaxed lifestyle. Gus Gus is often the first horse to capture the hearts of visitors, though his playful nature can sometimes result in a few bumps to the shins.
